Black History Month Paint & Sip
Join South Orange Downtown, South Orange Village, and CINC on Saturday, February 28 from 6PM to 8PM to celebrate culture, creativity, and community at our Black History Month Paint and Sip. Enjoy an engaging evening of art and connection with music by DJ Terry setting the tone as you paint, mingle, and celebrate together.
The cost is $10 per person plus processing fees. Complimentary appetizers and beverages will be provided.

Lunar Fest NJ Returns to Maplewood for Its Seventh Year, Celebrating Culture, Community, and the Arrival of Spring
MAPLEWOOD, N.J. – On Sunday, March 1, 2026, Lunar Fest NJ returns to The Woodland (60 Woodland
Road) for its 7th annual celebration of the Lunar New Year, marking the arrival of spring and the beginning
of a new year on the lunisolar calendar. Organized by SOMA Cross Cultural Works, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit
organization, the festival will celebrate the Year of the Fire Horse.
In lunisolar tradition, the Horse symbolizes energy, independence, strength, and perseverance. The Fire
Horse, in particular, represents a time of bold change, forward momentum, and new
opportunities—making it a fitting theme for a community celebration rooted in connection, creativity, and
growth.
Running from 12:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m., this free, family-friendly festival will feature cultural performances,
interactive children’s activities, local AAPI vendors, and festive foods. Lunar Fest NJ highlights traditions from
across the Asian diaspora and invites the wider community to come together in celebration and learning.
Since its founding in 2019, Lunar Fest NJ has grown into a beloved annual tradition in the SOMA community,
drawing hundreds of attendees each year and fostering cross-cultural understanding through art, performance,
and shared experience.
The 2026 festival is made possible through the generous support of community partners and sponsors,
including SOMA Cross Cultural Works, Maplewood Arts & Recreation, and Seton Hall University.

MLK DAY LUMINARIES, LIGHT INSTALLATION & CANNED FOOD DRIVE
Help bring light to Meadowland Park and our community to celebrate Dr. King’s legacy on Monday Jan 19th at 5PM.
Meadowland Park will be filled with the largest display of MLK Day luminaries in SOMA. In partnership with the Community Coalition on Race (CCR), the park will glow with luminaries, special lighting, and video installations using equipment donated by SOPAC, with generous financial support from Invisible Man.
Each luminary will be weighted with canned food, which will be donated to a local food pantry after the event. Community members are invited to bring cans of food to the Skate House starting at 2 pm on January 19, join a ceremonial lighting with local officials at 5 pm, and then wander the park to experience the installation.

The South Orange Maplewood Community Coalition on Race invites the community to gather for its 25th Annual Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Observance on Monday, January 19, 2026, at 2 pm, as the community honors Dr. King’s legacy and renews a shared commitment to equity and inclusion. This year’s theme, “Do Not Erase Our History,” calls on participants to remember that truth, memory, and historical understanding are essential to building the Beloved Community.
The observance will feature keynote speaker Dr. Khalil Gibran Muhammad, the inaugural Professor of African American Studies and Public Affairs at Princeton University, director of the Institutional Antiracism and Accountability Project, and a nationally recognized voice on the intersections of race, history, and justice. The program will also include readings from Dr. King’s writings, performances by the Columbia High School Chorus and Special Dance, and reflections from local clergy.
Following the observance, attendees are invited to visit the exhibit created by Durand Hedden House and Garden titled “Slavery in New Jersey: A Troubled History.” The exhibit explores the history of enslaved people in New Jersey from the beginnings of Dutch settlement in the 17th century through the end of the Civil War.

School's out, let's make Kawaii-style crafts together!
During this workshop we'll pay homage to all things Kawaii (translation: "cute" in Japanese!) and create a variety of adorable creatures. We'll draw, collage, sew, bedazzle- the cutie crafting options are endless!
We'll eat lunch at 11:30, please pack a nut-free lunch and filled waterbottle.

Team Unscreen Hosts “Alternative Device Fair” at Baird Community Center
Families Invited to Explore Non-Smartphone Options on November 13 in South Orange South Orange, NJ – September 26, 2025 – Team Unscreen, a grassroots initiative committed to redefining childhood by reducing reliance on smartphones, is excited to announce its Alternative Device Fair, taking place on Thursday, November 13 from 4:30–7 PM at the Baird Community Center in South Orange, NJ.
This family-friendly event invites parents and kids to explore and test non-smartphone devices in real life, offering a hands-on look at safer, kid-friendly alternatives. Representatives from leading tech safety brands including Troomi, Bark, Pinwheel, and Light will be on-site to showcase their products and answer questions. Attendees can also enter a raffle to win prizes like a SunbeamWireless device, a Tin Can Phone, and more.
